Live At The Ship Inn
We may be in the middle of the countryside but we have a bustling year-round calender of events and live music:-
Monday 31st May, 2010: From 2.00pm onwards will be traditional music and songs by Reg Reader, friends and company of the Blaxhall Ship. Visitors are encouraged to join in and do their own songs or music.
The 'Chorus Cup' this popular event was on the 11th April, 2010 and was won again by the 'Singers of the Ship' It was a close run thing with hot competition making it hard choice for the incorruptible judges! The event starts at around 14.30 when we take the tables outside and continues until late. Groups of singers compete to perform the best chorus song. There are intervals for musicians and other singers with 'around the room' music and song after the competition is over. Call Terry on 01394 282033 for details of entry for 2011. Practice now for next year!
The 'Chorus Cup' winners in 2009 year were also the singers of the 'Ship Inn' performing 'Strike the Bell' and beating the previous year's winners 'Five in a Bar' (with all around my hat) into second place.
The rules: Any group of at least three people but no more than six may sing a song with a good chorus. The event was started to encourage the willing but shy to start singing.
It's easier to start in company and we hope to encourage future generations to stand up in the Blaxhall Ship to present their stories in music and song. The winners and runners up receive engraved medals (more hard wearing than precious metals) and the winner has their name engraved in the quart tankard that stays in the pub. The competitors present themselves before the company and a panel of three incorruptible judges known locally as 'The Two Wise Men' (attempts to influence the outcome with small bribes may cause offense).
Try to bring a song of antiquity or a song in the folk tradition. Musical instruments are permitted as long as they are played by the singers, but they may be considered by the judges to be 'artificial aids'.
Please note that the song known as 'Pleasant and Delightful' (birds they sang melodious) is banned on the whim of the pub owner.
